Bridge-Building

Once again, we find ourselves amidst a technological revolution. The digital and ecological revolutions are both aspects of the technological and we are beginning to see political and social revolutions enabled by the new technology. This Neo-Technological revolution has once again determined a new architecture. El Lissitzky said that buildings in his day must be judged by different criteria determined by the “social commission” to be universal, a responsive building that “participates in the full realization of the new world.” Instead of the building, today, it is the people who must participate, enabled by new technology.

This revolution is destroying distance and accelerating time, while systems of life are at risk of being unsustainable. Capitalism’s foundation rests on perpetual growth, but what happens if growth is not possible? What happens in contraction, drought? In an era where deficits are toxic, perhaps we must fear the surpluses. There are two choices with surpluses: will they become waste or will they be appropriated into the new life of the city. To destroy is easy, to build is a struggle. This proposal seeks to build a bridge, one whose formation is the literal materials that today are surplus, at risk of becoming waste.

Crossing a bridge, one experiences both anticipation and arrival. However, today there is no possibility for arrival, as to arrive implies completion, finality. We must build the anticipation, enabling a self-sustaining energy and movement that propels humanity to a brighter future. Replacing the passive activity of the audience, the people take their positions on the stage - the world stage. Devoid of a passive audience, people around the world connect through the instantaneous voice of their activities, thoughts and creations. At this new height of individualism, we are sharing more than ever, anxiously anticipating the next update.
