Красный шар / The red sphere
The red sphere
“Every invention in art is a single event in time, has no evolution. With the passage of time different variations of the same theme are composed around the invention, sometimes more sharpened, sometimes more flattened, but seldom is the original power attained.”
El Lissitzky, 1926 [Helen Armstrong, Graphic Design Theory: Readings from the Field]
The impact of El Lissitzky on the modern art is unquestionable. The significance of abstract geometries in his works inspired us to entertain the idea of manifesting some of his compositions in the post industrial urban context. Most of basic geometries can be observed in our daily life; pine trees can depict triangles and buildings can be seen as rectangles. We decided to bring one of Lissitzky's motifs into the city which is completely absent from our modern routines; "The Red Circle".
Two geodesic sphere form a structurally self sufficient sphere. The center of the inner sphere is shifted to maximize structural stiffness, to enhance solar gain, and to shape a dynamic envelope. The red sphere can dynamically form different urban compositions with its constantly transforming context such as cars, urbanites, trees, and buildings. An entrance bridge, connects the city and a suspended platform inside the sphere which works as a permanent and yet transforming exhibition for Lissitzky's work.
